It’s a fact that listening can save lives, which is why our Listening Ear Service has been providing free, confidential, and compassionate support to anyone who needs someone to talk to. The latest figures from the first half of 2025 show just how vital this service is—and why it matters now more than ever.
The Scale of Support
In just six months, our volunteers have supported 1,538 chats with people reaching out for help. That’s more than 1,333 hours of listening, with each conversation lasting an average of 50 minutes. Every evening, seven days a week, our team is there to provide understanding and hope.
Reaching New People
The Listening Ear Service is not just supporting those who already know us. In fact, 31% of callers were contacting Kelly’s Heroes for the first time, showing that more people are finding the courage to reach out and ask for help.
Who We’re Supporting
- 76% of callers are female, but the service is open to everyone.
- 30% of callers are 18 or younger, highlighting the urgent need to support young people with their mental health.
The Conversations We’re Having
Many of the calls we receive are deeply serious. 45% of chats are suicide related, and within that figure, 28% involve someone who has attempted suicide. Since January, 147 people have told us they have attempted suicide themselves.
We also know the ripple effect suicide has on families and communities. Of the 170 chats, individuals told us they were bereaved by suicide, seeking comfort and connection during devastating times.
Why It Matters
These numbers are not just statistics—they represent people who might otherwise feel alone in their darkest moments. Each chat is a chance to listen, to support, and to show someone that they matter.
Our Listening Ear Service is powered by volunteers and the generosity of supporters who believe in ending the stigma around mental health and suicide. Together, we can continue to be there for those who need us most.
