What do we mean by Mental Health ?
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel and act. Staying in positive mental health allows people to realise their full potential, cope with the pressures of life, work productively, have positive relationships and make good choices.
It is easy to become confused around the language used, often we hear, mental health issue, mental wellbeing, mental distress – with so many different terminologies and confusing language it does little to break down the stigma when it’s so hard to understand. So, it is important to understand what we are talking about, so we can support effectively.
At We Mind & Kelly Matters, we really like this explanation by Dr. Stan Kutcher from Teen Mental Health, who helps to explain the different levels of no distress, mental distress, mental health problems and mental disorder/illness. This short video gives a great explanation.(Mental Health Literacy Pyramid Explained)
What Is the Best Definition of Mental Health?
The individual’s capacity to successfully adapt to life circumstances and to develop the ability to do so in a manner appropriate to the individuals’ age and capabilities. It does not mean the absence of negative emotional states. Mental health is not the antithesis of a mental disorder and exists across all states of mental distress, mental health problems and mental disorders. ~ Dr. Stan Kutcher

In 2008, New Economics Foundation used evidence from over 400 research papers to devise the “5 ways to wellbeing”, identifying five actions around the themes of social relationships, physical activity, awareness, learning, and giving.
These scientific studies have shown that if we do the following five things, our levels of happiness will increase.
- Connect
- Be Active
- Take notice
- Keep learning
- Give – helping others
So how do we start? Well we need to make our choices and act on them. Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. So, you can start with just a minute a day….

1. Connect
With the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.
With just 1 minute a day…
- Every friend has started out as ‘someone you didn’t know’. Start up a conversation, small chat with someone you’ve often thought about saying ‘hello!’ to.
- Message a friend. It doesn’t matter what it says, people appreciate it when you think of them.
You have an hour today ?
- Spend time with a friend or family member who needs support or company.
- Invite someone (a person you usually wouldn’t think to invite) to do something with you and your friends. Start up a WhatsApp group with likeminded people.
- Ask how someone’s weekend was and really listen when they tell you
Got longer than an hour on your hands?
- Organise a day in town with friends you haven’t seen for a while, or maybe a shopping trip, even window shopping can be a great day out.
- Take some time to get to know your family. Ask them about their past.
- Want to expand your social network? Meet people who share your interests!
2. Be Active
Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.
With just 1 minute a day…
- Plank for one minute! Doing this for a minute today will reap huge benefits. To see what we mean by a plank, type it into Google.
- Take the stairs not the lift
You have an hour today ?
- Go for a walk at lunchtime
- Walk into work – perhaps with a colleague – so you can ‘connect’ as well
- Get off the bus one stop earlier than usual and walk the final part of your journey to work.
Got longer than an hour on your hands?
- Take advantage of online discounts by visiting websites such as Groupon and LivingSocial which offer great deals on fitness activities such as yoga, rock climbing and even sailing lessons.
- Find some active classes on YouTube, there are loads of free classes, from yoga, to Joe Wicks, or Dance Classes, anything that’s makes your heartbeat faster
3. Take Notice
Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you. Happiness is often right in front of your eyes – more than enough to be happy right now. You don’t have to run into the future in order to get more.
With just 1 minute a day…
- Take notice of how you are feeling at this very moment, watch your thoughts and feel the sensations in the body.
- Take notice of how your colleagues are feeling or acting
You have an hour today ?
- Slow down. Take time to smell the roses, literally, look around you and take in something you see every day, notice it, really notice it
- Take a different route on your journey to or from work, take in the surroundings, or in you own street notice your environment
Got longer than an hour on your hands?
- Training your brain using mindfulness will help you to stay more focused on what is going on around you. Remember, you don’t notice how much you don’t notice until you start noticing the things you have not been noticing!
4. Keep Learning
Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take on a different responsibility at work. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.
With just 1 minute a day…
- Do a crossword or Sudoku
- Research something you’ve always wondered about
- Learn a new word.
You have an hour today ?
- Sign up for a class
- Read the news or a book
- Set up a book club
Got longer than an hour on your hands?
- The best way to stay engaged is to surround yourself with people who share your interest.
- Join a club or group that will bring your interest to life.
- Look up TED talks on YouTube
5. Give – Helping others
Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.
With just 1 minute a day…
- Be really friendly to a shop worker and ask them what they are up to on the weekend.
- Stop to help someone struggling with their bags up some stairs.
- Hold the door open for someone.
You have an hour today ?
- Do a chore for your family.
- Show appreciation for someone publicly.
Got longer than an hour on your hands?
- Whether it’s giving a mate a hand, throwing your weight in behind a cause that matters or just supporting other people in some way. Giving is like gold-dust for our mental wellbeing.
- Is your friend struggling with something? Lend your ear and then help them act.
- Go to a charity shop and donate something you don’t use. Others can put your clutter to good use.
